WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The World Cup is attracting new and old soccer fans with raucous viewing parties and its wild spirit. For those who have never played soccer or haven't since childhood, it can be tricky to keep up with soccer rules. How exactly does offsides work? Players bite each other?
Ally Bain is originally from Scotland and now works at Westbrook Soccer League as a 'football' coach. He said athletes on the field have extremely high levels of fitness, which lets them run and kick for the whole game.
'Every second, every goal counts,' he said.
While soccer (or football) is wildly popular around the world, it isn't in the U.S. Bain said he thinks it's because of the cultural shift in other countries toward soccer, while other sports have integrated into the U.S. culture. Whenever it is a World Cup year, he said interest in playing soccer spikes.
'It captivates the audience, they are able to watch something they can try and emulate,' said Bain.
He said he sees more kids taking soccer camps and that leads to more people trying out for the elite soccer teams.

Though he's from Scotland and lives in the U.S., Bain said he is routing for Holland, and he said he believes they will win. As for the U.S. vs Germany game, he said it is a competition changing game.
'After it, it's a knock-out competition among the teams,' he said.
