(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, NOVEMBER 21 - Salah's goal disappointed an entire nation. But Tunisia's strength emerged so that the disappointment lay for Egypt. The 'pharaohs' are out of the Africa Cup, which will be played in January in Equatorial Guinea. The Egyptian national team - seven-time winner of the Africa Cup - will have to watch the tournament on television for the third consecutive edition.
Tunisia had already qualified arithmetically for the finals when the home match took place in Monastir. Victory over the Egyptians served Tunisia to qualify for the third in the rankings. After Egypt's initial advantage scored by the Chelsea midfielder, second-half goals came the Tunisia's Wahbi and Yacin, delivering success to the hosts. Tunisia closed at the top of the group, ahead of Senegal, which also qualified.
Egypt has never been left out of three consecutive editions of the Africa Cup. Fate appears to be sealed for coach Gharib, who will be sanctioned in the coming days by at a meeting of the board of the Egyptian Football Association.
Tunisia is celebrating its soccer stars, the majority of whom play in France and enabled the national team to nail perfectly the qualification for the finals, with four victories and two ties.
While Tunisia dreams of the cup, so does Algeria, which closed the qualification rounds with 15 points in six matches, the fruit of five consecutive victories before an inconsequential defeat that came yesterday against Mali. The Algerians, which had already qualified, lost 2-0. But after earning an excellent track record in the World Cup last summer, Algeria is among the nations favoured for a final victory. The qualifying rounds have ended, hence the grid is ready for the African Cup of Nations to begin. After endless arguments about the risk of Ebola and the renunciation of Morocco (which has been excluded and sanctioned), the tournament will be played regularly in Equatorial Guinea from January 17- February 8. The final day of the qualification rounds yielded many surprises, including the elimination of the defending champion, Nigeria, who needed to beat South Africa in order to qualify but instead tied at 2-2. In addition to Tunisia, Algeria and the hosts, Equatorial Guinea, teams going to the finals include Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal, South Africa and Zambia. The draw for the finals will be held on December 3rd.
